Grades & Responsibility

This year, your child will grow in so many ways. The first few weeks of school can be scary and overwhelming to you and your child. We understand that this is a new experience, and our team works to make the transition as easy as possible. With this being the first year earning grades, this also adds some additional pressure on your child. Grades may be a motivator for some students, but others may become discouraged at first. Please check Sunguard every few days, but please do not panic if you child has a C or D. Usually, after the first 9 weeks, students realize how hard they have to work to maintain their desired grade. The sixth grade expectations are very different than fifth grade, so it is important to remember that there will be a few weeks at the beginning of the year that your child may struggle academically until they get into the swing of things.

In addition, I encourage your child to advocate for themselves in regards to school work, and missing assignments. When logging onto Sungard, if you see a missing assignment, PLEASE encourage your child to speak with me. Although it may be easier for you to email me personally, I would love for your child to take on this responsibility. I feel that a big part of my job is to teach them to be responsible for themselves, and their work. Starting at the beginning of the year, I make sure to check with each student during Study Strategies to see what they are missing, and provide additional support.

Study Strategies

What is Study Strategies?

Study Strategies is a scheduled class that your child will attend with their Intervention Specialist (me). During this time, your child will be working on homework, other assignments, receive additional help in all subject areas, and access online interventions.

At the beginning of the year, your child will be scheduled with me for Study Strategies for the maximum amount of time allowed in their schedule. During Study Strategies, your child will be able to work on assignments, and I will provide interventions and support in the areas that your child is struggling with. As the year progresses, the team assess the needs of each child, and we discuss whether or not your child actually needs all of the support that I am providing. If the team feels that your child would be more successful in Team Support, with one of the 6 Service teachers, we look to provide services for them in the least restrictive environment. If your child is moved to Team Support, they will be able to come see me during that same period if they need support; however, they usually do not stay with me the entire period.

Any changes regarding Team Support and Study Strategies will be discussed with you before any changes are made.
