Mrs. Farmer

Hi! My name is Lisa Farmer and I am a kindergarten teacher at Evamere School. It is hard for me to believe, but this is my 25th year teaching in the Hudson City School District. I have taught students with learning disabilities at Ellsworth Hill and McDowell Schools for 17 years and have now been a kindergarten teacher for the past seven years. I specifically requested to transfer to kindergarten at the end of 2012. Originally I taught two half-day sessions and six years ago I was thoroughly thrilled to be invited to teach all day kindergarten! I can't wait to get started on my seventh year of full-day kindergarten this month!

I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education (K-8) from Miami University and a master's degree in learning disabilities/behavior disorders (K-12) from John Carroll University. I also have a reading endorsement from Kent State University and about sixty+ additional graduate level hours. Eight years ago I earned my Master Teacher status.  This summer I attended a two-day workshop on "Conscious Discipline" and a one-day training for our new reading program.   I was once asked if I was a "perpetual student" and I have to admit... "I AM!"  I LOVE learning and find that teaching is a position where one MUST continuously learn.  I am proud to say that I am a "lifelong learner" and hope that I am able to instill the excitement of being a "lifelong learner" in your child this year.
I believe in hands-on investigative learning and teaching children about flexibility.  Children learn how to use all 5 of their senses in kindergarten and they will definitely be using them in G-5 this year!  I LOVE to cook with children and encourage them as they learn to read the recipes and solve math problems involving measurement. I play the guitar and also enjoy singing songs which teach important concepts.  Your child will be learning what RECORDS are since I still have some, and play them on my own children's Fisher Price record player in the classroom.  Movement is also important. So we'll take "brain brakes" to recharge ourselves throughout the day.  Almost all of my teaching is done both visually and verbally.  With having a special education background, I must confess that I am most definitely a multi-sensory type teacher.   Recently I have been actively involved in the "Leader in Me" initiative at Evamere.  It is a natural part of my classroom as I strive to encourage children to be independent problem solvers.  Children learn and live the 7+1 Habits of Happy/Healthy children in G-5.  I enjoy my job and hope that your child with love school too!
Personally, I have three grown children, six grandchildren, one rabbit, one fish, and one dog.   I began teaching in 1980 when I taught third grade at a parochial school in Bedford, Ohio.  After a year, I was hired at Hathaway Brown in Shaker Heights as a pre-kindergarten teacher. It is while I was at this school that I earned my master's degree in 1984. As sometimes happens in life, once I had this additional degree I became pregnant with my first child and quit teaching, to be a "full-time stay-at-home" mom. My son, Michael is now 34 years old. He is certified to teach middle school and high school science (biology in particular).  He, too, is a perpetual learner and is currently working on a degree in seminary.   Shortly after Michael was born, I had our second child, Amy, who is now 32, married and also a mom! Once Michael and Amy were both in school and I re-entered the teaching profession, (this time teaching preschool music), I again became pregnant and had our third child, Steven who is 27 and working as a mechanical engineer for The Timken Co. in Davenport, Iowa.  My teaching experience both at home and in schools has made me the teacher I am today. I have learned from masterful teachers along the way, including my mother, sister, my own children and the students/parents/teachers in Hudson!

In my spare time, I enjoy "stamping" cards with my sister in Macedonia at her "Stampin' Up" classes, reading, attending summertime concerts and traveling. I also enjoy being with my children and watching as they interact with my grandchildren. It is an honor to be employed by the Hudson City School District and I am thrilled to work with so many fabulous families who support education!!!!
