Meet Mrs. Smoral
Hello!  My name is Mrs. Rosemarie Smoral.  My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Reading Certification from John Carroll University.  I also received a Master's Degree in Elementary School Administration from the University of Akron.   My experience includes teaching first grade, second grade, and third grade.  I have also been an Interventionist Specialist at McDowell in the Supplemental Reading Program.  In 2004, I received the Distinguished Teacher Award in the Hudson City Schools.   In 2009, the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation named me as a Jennings Scholar.  In 2010, I was presented the Elementary Teacher of the Year Award by the Hudson PTO.   In 2020, I earned my third designation of a Master Teacher, which means I have met and exceeded the standards in teaching established by the state of Ohio.  My husband, Steve and I reside in Chagrin Falls.  We have two sons, Patrick and Matthew.  Patrick lives in Bozeman, Montana and Matthew lives in Tampa, Florida.

My philosophy relies heavily on partnership between parent, child, and teacher.  If we work together with your child, he/she will feel both the importance that we place upon education as well as our support as we encourage them to take the academic risks that will help them grow as leaders and learners!

I will strive to meet each child at the level at which they enter my classroom.  I know children learn in different ways.  Therefore differentiated instruction is part of my daily teaching.  I effectively use independent, collaborative and whole-class instruction to support individual learning goals and provide varied options for how students will demonstrate mastery.  I will work with each child and help him/her to grow throughout the school year. That growth, I hope, will encompass social, emotional, and personal development as well as academic growth.

My classroom is a nurturing environment in which learners feel comfortable taking educational risks.  We will work together to create an atmosphere of respect for all learners.  I expect the students to be successful and they will expect the same of themselves.  Each day I talk with the children and see that they enjoy some small success and some recognition as a very special person!   In my classroom the students will synergize as a team of learners.  Daily lessons are student-led, with me as a role of facilitator.  Students will be expected to challenge themselves and challenge others as we work together as problem solvers.  Students are leaders and examples of effective and positive citizens in the classroom and the school.

I ask you to be open and consistent in your communication not only with me but with your child as well.  Please ask everyday. "What did you learn in school today?"   Pry if you must, but help your child by remaining interested in their job as a student.
This year as we learn in a virtual classroom I will strive to create a positive virtual environment where all learners can achieve at his/her potential. I am anxious to create and build strong relationships and bonds with my students and families. I look forward to celebrating your child's accomplishments. I know there will be many proud moments shared this school year!

High expectations, I believe, lead to high achievement.
I look forward to meeting students and families via Zoom at our Open House scheduled from 4-6:00pm on Wednesday, August 26th!  Please use this SignUpGenius to sign up for a time. During the virtual Open House I will get to meet and talk with students and families in small groups. I can't wait to meet the students in our new Virtual Learning family. Looking forward to an AMAZING school year!
