Mrs. Reed

Katharine Reed is the Director of Bands at Hudson High School and Middle School, in Hudson, Ohio.  She completed her Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Akron. Reed previously spent eight years as Director of Bands at Durango High School in Durango, Colorado. At DHS, she oversaw the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensembles, and taught Music Theory and Piano. Her ensembles received straight Superior “I” ratings, were selected for the Colorado State Concert Band Festival (top 20 concert bands in the state) for the first time in school history, were a class 3A Finalist (top 4) in Colorado State Marching Band Competition, placed first at the Fort Lewis College Jazz Festival, and received the Outstanding High School Jazz Band Award which afforded them the opportunity to open for Delfeayo Marsalis, the Marching Band performed at the halftime show for the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, TX, and several students were selected for the Colorado All-State Band and Jazz Band. The band program grew exponentially during her tenure from 15 to over 120 students. 

​Reed received several teaching awards, including: Teacher of the Year, twice, Coach of the Year, and The Legacy Award, which was awarded by her superintendent. She was also chosen as a quarterfinalist for the GRAMMY’S Music Educator Award. Reed presented a clinic entitled Small Band Building Blocks at the 2018 Colorado Bandmasters Association Conference. She graduated Cum Laude from Iowa State University with a degree in Instrumental Music Education, where she studied conducting with Dr. Michael Golemo and Dr. Matthew Smith, and trumpet with Dr. Jim Bovinette.  She is a Graduate Assistant at The University of Akron School of Music with Dr. Galen Karriker and Dr. Andrew Feyes.  She resides in Stow, Ohio, with her husband, Dr. Marc Reed, Director of the School of Music and School of Dance, Theater, and Arts Administration at The University of Akron, and her children Teddy and Julia.
