The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes graduating seniors who can demonstrate high levels of proficiency in English and at least one other language. The Seal of Biliteracy is one of the possible diploma seals students may earn to fulfill graduation requirements for the state of Ohio.
-
1) Student must be a junior or senior in good standing who is within 15 months of graduating.
2) Student must demonstrate English proficiency based on approved ELA proficiency requirements.
3) Student must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language based on an approved assessment.
Testing for the Seal of Biliteracy:
- Our district primarily uses the following assessments to fulfill the foreign language requirement (cost varies by assessment):
- AAPPL (vendor: ACTFL/LTI)
- ALIRA (vendor: ACTFL/LTI )
- Advanced Placement (vendor: College Board)
- STAMP (vendor: Avant)
- For eligibility for the Seal of Biliteracy, students must take these assessments in a proctored environment.
- We administer AAPPL and ALIRA tests in October for seniors (registration and payment due in early September) and in April for juniors and seniors (registration and payment due in early March).
- Juniors and Seniors enrolled in Level 4 language classes will have the opportunity to take the AAPPL or ALIRA (Latin) assessments in April. Those teachers will provide information regarding the registration process.
- Students enrolled in AP classes will have the opportunity to take the AP test in May.
- Please note: Students who wish to use the Seal of Biliteracy as one of the two required seals for graduation will not be able to use the AP test to fulfill this requirement if they take the test as a senior, since we do not receive scores until July.
- Students not enrolled in a world language class or seniors who wish to retake the test may also register at the above times. These students will need to coordinate with Sra. Boelter to get information about registering and to determine a time to sit for the test.
- Our district primarily uses the following assessments to fulfill the foreign language requirement (cost varies by assessment):
