• The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley

    Week of August 21, 2023

Advisory lessons centered on building relationships and making connections with each other! At the heart of what we do as a school, so each student feels a sense of belonging!

Students are enjoying our newly tiled cubes from our Artist in Residency Project. Many thanks to the Hudson City Schools Foundation, The Tom and Gail Tobin Family Fund and artist Angelica Pozo.

Creating a human timeline of events in 6th grade Social Studies! Discussing WHY we study history!

We love seeing our media center filled with students excited about books!

The Art of Communication: Language Arts students practice effective communication through abstract art and informational writing.
Mrs. Kingan introduces 6th grade students to our incredible media center and all of the resources to support students’ learning and love of books!

At our opening assemblies with students, we asked students to think about what kind of school they’d like HMS to be, and what each of us can do to make that happen.

Here are just a few of their insights about the kind of school they want HMS to be:

    • An inclusive, welcoming place

    • A family where everyone feels at home

    • A place where we take care of each other, and students and staff want to come back to each day

    • A place where no one feels alone and everyone is kind

    • A school where the positive energy is through the roof

When asked what they can do to make that happen, students share ideas such as:

    • Be kind to ALL

    • Make others feel welcome

    • Doing little things to make a big difference in a person's day

    • Ask someone to sit with you if they are alone

    • Bring positive energy to everyone and be inclusive and bright!

    Important Notes:

HMS Announcements - Please feel free to visit this site daily for up-to-date announcements for our students and school!

    Open House Nights:

    • Thank you to those who attended the 6th and 7th grade Open House events this week! We loved seeing you in our classrooms and hallways! And we heard from so many parents how appreciative they were of the evening. One parent even shared, “My daughter is living the life here! Her teachers are more than I could have ever hoped for!
    • We look forward to meeting our 8th grade families at our upcoming HMS Open House night on August 30, from 6:00-7:45pm.

    • A letter and schedule will come home with your child the day before the Open House event. Be sure to bring that schedule with you to Open House (or take a photo).

    • PLEASE NOTE: This is a different format than the K-5 Open House nights. In grades 6-12, our Open House format is designed to allow parents to walk through their child’s schedule to learn from each teacher about the course and curriculum.

    • Because our Open Houses are very well attended by parents/guardians, students do not typically attend.

    • If you are unable to attend, please visit our teachers' webpages for information about their courses.

iPad Insurance - by September 1 at 4:00pm:

Mark Your Calendars - September 12 - Dr. Lisa Damour Parent/Guardian Night:

    • More information will be forthcoming about an incredible parent/guardian presentation by Dr. Lisa Damour, scheduled for September 12 at 7:00pm in the HHS Auditorium, thanks to Hudson Community First!  Dr. Damour will present practical guidance for supporting our children. This will be one of several opportunities for families through a Speaker Series this year! Look for more detailed information to follow.

Homework Connection (Free Tutoring by NHS Students):

    • The Homework Connection program (free tutoring) begins Sunday, September 10th at the Hudson Library, thanks to our High School National Honor Society student leaders. Click here for more information!
