• The Week in Review at HMS: Notes from Dr. Cockley

    Week of November 6, 2023

Thank you and congratulations to our October Students Making a Difference! These students are kind, inclusive, conscientious, and full of sunshine! Thank you for making a difference in our school every day! ⁦

We are so grateful to Hudson Community First for bringing Dr. Tim Bono to our school and community! As the author of Happiness 101, Dr. Bono had great insights to share with our students and staff! Some of his key takeaways for taking care of our mental health are:

    1. Phones can be used for good and for bad. Take advantage of the good things, don’t get sucked into the bad things.

    2. Temptations are everywhere. Strengthen your Willpower muscles by overriding them when you can.

    3. Be careful about what you see and what you post on social media. If you see an instance of cyberbullying, speak up!

    4. Know how to build mental health in your life through gratitude, exercise, and a good night’s sleep.

Honoring our country's veterans! 7th grade students create individual stars, after researching a veteran in their family or community. These stars will be part of a larger patriotic flag display!

Our HMS Service Learning program was honored at the annual state conference for OMLA (Ohio Middle Level Association) with the Service Learning Award! So proud of our students and Ms. Hohenfeld!

Rube Goldberg collaboration in our Maker Space! Love seeing our students engaged in choice STEM activities, and creatively solving problems together!

Language Arts students up and moving, as they discuss their recent chapter of Where the Red Fern Grows! Next, they focus on characterization and elements of the story, by writing a postcard from Billy to his family!

We loved having our Hudson High School HUDDLE mentors visit HMS to teach us important life lessons. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise with us!

We love to crown our champions at the end of each unit in PE class. This year, our teachers have added the “Sportsmanship Award,” celebrating teams who are inclusive, fair and respectful at all times.

Career Exploration in our Service Learning and Careers course, thanks to Mrs. Wallack (school counselor)! Students spend time exploring careers of interest, focused on the education and skills needed, as well as the future outlook of that career field.

Fun learning activities centered on Engaged Collaborator, throughout our building! Thank you to our students and staff for spending time focused on this important tenet of our Portrait of an Explorer!
Thank you to our HS Football Team and Cheerleaders for visiting HMS today! Our students had a blast seeing you in the halls, and on behalf of HMS, we’re proud of your accomplishments thus far, and we’re cheering you on this weekend!

    Important Notes:

HMS Announcements - Please feel free to visit this site daily for up-to-date announcements for our students and school!

    Holiday Sharing:

    • Please check out our Holiday Sharing document, with information about our district-wide efforts to support local families in need this holiday season.

    • Our middle school canned food drive ends Tuesday, 11/14. Students are asked to bring in non-expired canned goods for donation.  Since these cans will be used long past Thanksgiving, please consider donating a variety of foods. Science teachers will be collecting the cans in their classrooms.

    11/17 Thanksgiving Luncheon

    • One of our favorite days of the year is just around the corner! Our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon will be Friday, 11/17, with extended lunches for each grade. Our wonderful cooks are preparing a traditional feast of roasted turkey, sides, cookies, and milk.  The student price for this meal is $3.75.

    • This will be the only menu item available that day, so if this menu is not to the student’s liking, please pack a lunch.

    • The students will be served by their teachers and staff.  We encourage everyone to “dress up” to celebrate Thanksgiving together.  We will all be entertained by members of our Orchestra!

    HMS Staff Shout Outs:

    • Has an HMS staff member made a difference for your child? We love to show appreciation for our amazing staff at HMS! Here’s an opportunity to share more personally if a staff member has made a difference, no matter how big or small. I will be sure to recognize their efforts individually and quietly.
