Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Varnum

My name is Renee Varnum and I am thrilled to be your child's kindergarten teacher.  I believe building relationships with students and families is the foundation for a great school year.  I will work hard to get to know your child both academically and personally.  My hope is that your children feel that I am an advocate for both their academic and social-emotional learning.

My educational background includes an undergraduate degree from John Carroll University as well as a  Master’s Degree in early childhood education/K-12 Reading Endorsement from Ursuline College.  I am also trained in Reading Recovery.  I spent 13 years of my teaching career as a reading intervention teacher at both Evamere and Ellsworth Hill.  I have also taught 1st and 2nd grade.  This will be my 4th year of teaching kindergarten and I am thrilled to call McDowell Early Learning Center, “home.”

I have an educational passion for literacy.  I love working with students on their readiness skills that will lead them on the magic road of reading. One of my main goals is to help students gain confidence so they are able to take risks with their learning.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy reading, baking, and hiking with my family.  My husband and I have two children and spend a lot of our weekend time at their sporting events.  Football season means a  "house divided" as my daughter and I cheer for the Pittsburgh Steelers and my husband and son cheer for the Cleveland Browns.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.  I am looking forward to a great year with your child and can't wait to have you as part of our class family!
