Welcome to B-2!
My name is Kate Thomas, and I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to educate your children as they embark on their learning adventure. I look forward to working with you! My goal is to provide a happy and safe classroom environment in which all of the children will become capable and successful learners. I have been teaching in the Hudson City School District since 2011. All of those years have been spent in Kindergarten. I also taught Kindergarten in the Wadsworth City School District for a year. In 2007, I graduated from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. I received my Elementary Education Degree, and later decided to move to Ohio where I continued my education. Here I became certified in Early Childhood Education. In April of 2014, I earned a Master’s Degree in The Art of Teaching and Reading. Each summer I continue to develop my learning by taking courses where I directly work with and improve the Kindergarten curriculum. Within the Hudson City School District, I am part of the Response to Intervention Team. This team allows me to enjoy helping the Kindergarten teachers differentiate their teaching for each individual child.
My love for teaching began as a young child. I grew up in Wexford, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Both of my parents were teachers. My dad was a high school Latin teacher, and my mom was an elementary teacher. I spent many hours inside their classrooms, understanding what it means to be a dedicated teacher. I now get to do what I love every day, being a teacher and advocating for my students on a daily basis. Outside of the school day, my hobbies consist of exercising, remodeling our home, and spending time with my Italian family. There is truly nothing better than cooking a big Italian meal and sitting down to enjoy it with them. I have been with my “better half”, Mr. White, as he goes by in the classroom, for 17 years. We love to kayak, go out to dinner, and travel. We recently went to Zion National Park and Alaska. Two of our most favorite adventures.
Kindergarten is an exciting time for everyone! The school year will be filled with lots of learning and new experiences. As the year progresses, you will notice a tremendous amount of growth both academically and socially in your child. I hope to instill the love of learning in your child as I provide a thought provoking, engaging classroom for them. Your child will be immersed in literacy through the use of the adopted Hudson City School Curriculum. We utilize the Reading and Writing Workshop models created by Lucy Calkins and Teachers College at Columbia University. Daily, your child will also be developing their knowledge of mathematics. Using the Bridges Mathematics Curriculum, your child will experience a highly collaborative environment where they will get the chance to use manipulatives, pictures, and numbers to develop strategies for solving problems. Your child will also develop strong mathematical thinking and reasoning abilities through investigations in the areas of numbers, operations, algebraic thinking, measurement, data, and geometry. Finally, through the integration of science and social studies, your child will be able to experience the world around them. Kindergarten students study concepts such as: families, community, the five sense, nutrition, dental health, map skills, culture, and so much more! J
During our time together I hope to make an impact on each of the students as we learn together. Please know that your child is MY child too. Your child is a part of my heart and our class family the moment they enter our classroom. I am honored to get the opportunity to experience the many milestones of Kindergarten with you and your child. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school by phone, note, or e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Together I believe that we can make this year a fantastic one filled with many successes. I look forward to working with you and your child! Here’s to a magical year!
