Degrees and Certifications:
Welcome to the Rourke/VanderSchie team! I am so excited for the great year ahead.
I graduated the University of Akron (GO ZIPS!) with a B.S.B.A. in marketing and advertising with a minor in communications. I later returned to school for my education degree. I earned my Masters degree in education and reading endorsement from Kent State University.
This is my 24rd year of teaching (I know that's shocking given my youthful appearance) and I have been teaching in the Hudson City School District for 20 years. I teach Language Arts for the team, and Mrs. VanderSchie teaches math and Inquiry. In addition to teaching in the classroom, I am the Language Art Content Facilitator for fifth grade.
I live in Cuyahoga Falls with my husband, Wayne, and daughter, Delaney. Wayne works at Allstate as a part of the sales leadership team. Delaney and I aren't really sure what he does on a day-to-day basis, but we know it involves a lot of acronyms and business catch phrases such as "circling back" and "next steps." Delaney just started her sophomore year at Charleston Southern University in South Carolina. She is majoring in Communications with a minor in Sports Marketing. She is a member of Alpha Delta Pi and is the Vice President of Marketing for the sorority. It was a natural next step as she was able to parlay her banner making skills and use of glitter to the collegiate level. We have a dog named Scout and a cat named Boo Radley who get all of my attention now that Delaney is at college. We also have a fish named Lil' Uzi Vert, but he is often not metioned since Delaney refused to name him after a character in To Kill a Mockingbird!
In my "free time," I volunteer quite a bit in my community. I serve on the Building our Future Together Levy Committee and do quite a bit for the CFHS Athletic Department. Delaney was very active in high school as a class officer, student council secretary, and cheerleader for both football and basketball. I was pretty wrapped up in her activites (as you do when you are the parent of a high school student) so I decided to continue volunteering even though she graduated. Wayne thinks I am doing it to fill the void of my sidekick being gone (he is absolutely correct) and because I don't want to face being an empty nester (also correct!) I love baseball, attending high school and college sporting events, taking writing classes, and photography. Delaney says that I toss in the fact that I was a photography major my freshman year of college into daily conversation, but I don't. (It's like twice a week at most.) I really love getting to know my students and building personal relationships. I am looking forward to a fabulous year!
