Hello! My name is Kristen Gilliland. I provide school counseling services at East Woods Intermediate School. I have a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in School Counseling from the University of Akron. I taught sixth grade at Hudson Middle School for eight years before becoming a school counselor at Hudson Elementary. I live in Tallmadge with my husband, Mick, and our three children, Ian, Aidan, and Ellie.
I approach my interaction with students with the mantra of one of my favorite authors, Ross Greene, "kids do well if they can". I work with students, parents, and school team members supporting students to develop the skills they need to do well!
I have the privilege of teaching regularly in all of the classrooms addressing topics such as celebrating differences, responsibility, problem solving, respect, dealing with peer pressure, and self regulation. Principles from Steven Covey's The Leader in Me are embedded in classroom guidance lessons as well as the culture created at McDowell. Small group sessions are offered and designed to help children learn about personal strengths, developing coping strategies, and establishing effective peer relationships.
