TAB and Choice Based Learning at East Woods:

Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) is a nationally recognized choice-based art education approach to teaching art. Teaching artistic behaviors and choice-based learning empowers the student to make many of the choices regarding their art experience. Students are able to determine subject matter and materials while utilizing extensive planning processes and reflection techniques. The art room is set up in various material centers that the student is free to explore in order to create. There are many underlying structures that allow students the freedom and responsibility to engage in their learning. Ultimately, Students are able to experience an authentic creative process.

Why Teach and Learn This Way?

When students are in control of their learning, they are more engaged. Research shows that the best way for students to learn is to have them be highly engaged in the learning. TAB and choice-based learning is a genuine way for students to become invested in an excited about the creative process. Students explore and investigate various art processes, materials and subject matter. The teacher's job is to guide and facilitate individualized learning for every student while introducing artists, demonstrating new techniques, and helping students think like a creative artist. Choice-based art education supports multiple modes of learning and assessment for the diverse needs of students. All state art standards are met through this process. In a TAB art room, the individual student and their ideas are honored and celebrated!

What can I expect from my student?

Your student will be finding inspiration from the heart; they will be creating art based on their own interests and ideas. The process is where the learning occurs. The idea generation, planning, experimenting, reflecting and adjusting are the important skills the teacher is observing. You can also expect your student to gain important 21st-century skills including collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, risk-taking, creativity, and initiative. Your student should also express excitement and take pride in their success!

I am looking forward to a great year in art!!!!!
