Black Gum Trees along the East Side of McDowell/East Woods Bus Lot

The twelve Black Gum trees along this sidewalk were planted in November of 2024.  The primary goals of this project are to provide shade, moderate storm water runoff, and provide a beautiful natural connection between East Woods and McDowell.  Black Gum (Nyssa Sylvatica), a native species, was chosen because of its:

  • Height (eventually 50+ feet) and structural integrity
  • Suitability for this site and soil quality
  • Spectacular fall foliage
  • Flowers and fruit which are an important food source for bees, birds and squirrels
  • Long lifespan (150-300 years) and durability

This project is 100% funded by ReGreen for Hudson Schools.
