Hello, I am the Parent Mentor for the Hudson School District. The Parent Mentor Program is a grant funded program through the Ohio Department of Education Office of Exceptional Children (OCECD). I am available as an additional resource to help parents navigate the special education system. As a parent of a child with special needs I have spent time supporting, advocating and collaborating with schools to attain the best possible public education for my child. The varied experiences I have had parenting a child with a disability combined with my involvement within the school system and community as a volunteer, substitute teacher and aide enables me to help other parents foster their child’s school and community relationships.
Some of the support I am available to offer as a Parent Mentor may include:
- Availability to attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings with families.
- Provide information and resources to families on topics such as education law, district programs and community support for the students.
- Make sure parents have all the information, support and resources they need to support their children from preschool all the way to adulthood.
- Listen to and support parents as well as discuss the importance of the parents and families role in their child’s education.
I look forward to being a resource for you. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time, I am always happy to help! ~ Darlene
