HHS Message to Parents/Guardians, 3/13/2020
Attention HHS Parents/Guardians:
As was made famous in the movie, The Wizard of Oz, "...we're not in Kansas anymore!" These are unprecedented times in education. Expect more communication in the coming weeks . . . but here's what was shared with our student body this morning:
Attention students: starting Monday, we will be navigating uncharted waters. Due to Governor DeWine’s decree, all schools in Ohio, public and private, will be closed for three weeks or at least through Friday, April 3rd in the state’s attempt to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus. During this time, all school events are cancelled or postponed—including athletics, drama, club activities and so on. Also during this time, we have our annual spring break, which is March 23-27.
Our staff will be finalizing plans on Monday and Tuesday to launch a remote learning format where students will continue to engage in learning through Google Classroom via Chromebooks. Students will not be responsible for any school work on these two days.
Beginning Wednesday, teachers will open their Google Classrooms in the subjects of English, Social Studies and World Languages. Then on Thursday, teachers in Math and Science will open their online classes. Finally, on Friday, Art, Health/PE, Business, Music, and FCS—the electives—will launch. We’ll stay with a similar interval following the time off during spring break. Office hours will be established in each department and student participation and/or communication will be logged for attendance purposes. And yes, we’ll be assessing students along the way and posting grades. Your teachers will be sharing more information and details on how learning will be scheduled and structured in their particular classes next week.
If you experience any challenges that classroom teachers can’t address, feel free to reach out to your counselor, case manager or any administrator. This is new for all of us so we don’t expect perfection right out of the gate--we’ll work together to address issues and keep progressing in our coursework.
Our Tuesday Explorer Period was postponed to today so it would be a good opportunity to have questions answered if you anticipate challenges. For sure, take your Chromebook, textbooks, instruments, class supplies, etc. with you at the end of the day. We’ll be here next week if you need to stop by for any missing materials.
Lastly, the crisis in Ohio, across many states and across the World is real but we can all do our part by following recommendations for good hygiene, maintain “social distancing” of 6 feet or more and avoid mass gatherings if/when possible. We’ll share more information next week.
